Benedict Anthony Duke Martins

Minister Martins was born on 02 September 1956. He holds a Master of Law degree in International Law from the University of Cape Town; and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Natal. He was a member of the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1970s. Between 1983 and 1991 he was charged and imprisoned for eight years in Robben Island and Johannesburg. He had been a Member of Parliament since 1994, and had chaired the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs. The Minister is a member of the Political Bureau and Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
